What is a practicum learning agreement?

Programs use different names for it, such as learning contract, scope of work, or practicum plan, but the idea is the same. It's the student-level plan for your practicum. That makes it different from the affiliation agreement, which is the legal contract between your university and the site.

What it usually covers

• Learning objectives describing what you'll be able to do by the end.
• Projects and tasks you'll work on.
• Deliverables, meaning the concrete products you'll create.
• Competencies the work will address.
• Schedule, including start and end dates, expected weekly hours, and on-site or remote arrangements.
• Supervision, including who your preceptor is and how often you'll meet.
• Signatures from you, your preceptor, and usually a faculty advisor or coordinator.

Why it matters

A clear agreement is your best protection against a practicum that drifts into busywork. If your tasks change later, the signed plan gives you a neutral starting point for the conversation. Mismatched expectations from day one shows what happens when nothing is written down.

Tips for drafting it

• Draft it with your preceptor rather than handing them a finished document.
• Size the projects realistically for your hours. Students often overpromise, a trap covered in underestimating project scope.
• Make deliverables specific enough that anyone could tell whether they were completed.
• Submit it before your start date if your program requires approval first. Some programs don't count hours until it's approved, so check with your program.
