Can I get paid for my practicum?

Paid practicums exist, but they aren't the norm in every area of public health. Whether you can find one depends on your field, your region, and your program's policies.

Kinds of compensation you may see

• Hourly wages. Some health systems, larger nonprofits, and research projects hire practicum students as temporary staff.
• Stipends. A fixed amount for the whole placement, sometimes funded by a grant or a fellowship program.
• Program-funded awards. Some schools offer practicum stipends or travel awards that follow you to an unpaid site.
• Indirect support. Parking, transit passes, or covered clearance fees don't pay the rent, but they reduce costs.

Does being paid change anything?

Most programs allow paid practicums as long as the work meets the same learning requirements and supervision standards. Some have extra rules, such as keeping practicum projects separate from ordinary job duties. Check with your program before you accept, especially if the site plans to treat you as an employee. How to ask about pay

It's a normal, professional question. During an interview or early conversation, try something like: "Could you tell me how the practicum is structured, including whether there's a stipend or other compensation?"
