Should I do my practicum in summer or during the semester?

Many MPH programs, especially two-year programs, build the practicum around the summer between the first and second year. Others let you complete it part-time during a semester, or spread it across more than one term. Check what your program allows before you plan around either option.

The case for summer

• Focus. With few or no classes, you can work longer blocks and take on bigger projects.
• Site availability. Many organizations plan for summer students and schedule projects accordingly.
• Momentum. Full-time hours can help you finish your requirement in a shorter window.

The downsides: summer is when many students need paid work, preceptors take vacations, and some programs require summer tuition or registration for practicum credit.

The case for a semester practicum

• Pacing. A few days a week over a longer period gives you time to reflect and lets projects mature.
• Flexibility for workers. If you have a summer job or other commitments, spreading hours out may be the only realistic option.
• Longer relationships. More weeks at a site can mean more chances to network and see a project from start to finish.

Questions to help you decide

• When does your program expect the practicum to be finished relative to your ILE?
• Does your target site have projects only at certain times of year?
• Do you need income during summer?
• How many hours can you realistically give each week in a semester?
