What if my placement falls through before I start?

Placements collapse for reasons you can't control. Grant funding ends, a preceptor changes jobs, an affiliation agreement stalls, or the site decides it can't take a student after all. It's stressful, but it's usually fixable if you move fast.

First 48 hours

• Notify your practicum coordinator. Explain what happened and when you learned about it. They may know sites with open spots or be able to approve a later start.
• Ask the site what changed. If the problem is timing or funding, a delayed start or a smaller project might still work. If not, ask whether they can recommend another organization.
• Contact your backups. Reach out to sites you spoke with earlier. A warm contact moves much faster than cold outreach, which is why the affiliation agreement bottleneck recommends keeping alternatives in mind.

Protect your timeline

Ask your program whether you can shift your start date, extend your practicum into the next term, or adjust registration. Get any changes in writing. Prioritize sites that already have an agreement with your university, since a new one can take weeks.

Changing your mind after accepting is different from losing a placement, but the same rule applies: talk to your coordinator before you do anything. Tell the original site promptly and professionally, and don't leave a placement until a new one is approved. Reasons like a changed schedule, major safety concerns, or work that doesn't match what was agreed are easier to support than simply finding a site you like better.
