- How do I choose between practicum sites?Weigh the actual projects, the quality of supervision, and whether the work supports your required competencies. Prestige and convenience matter less than fit.
- What should I say in a practicum outreach email?Keep it short: who you are, why this organization, what you could help with, your timeline and hours, and one clear ask. Attach a resume and follow up once.
- How do I prepare for a practicum interview?Research the organization, prepare two or three stories showing relevant skills, know your schedule and program requirements, and bring questions of your own.
- What is an affiliation agreement and how long does it take?It is a contract between your university and site covering liability, confidentiality and supervision. New ones can take weeks to months, so start right away.
- What clearances and immunizations might my site require?Common ones are background checks, fingerprinting, a TB test, vaccine records, a drug screen, and site trainings. Requirements vary, so get the full list early.
- What is a practicum learning agreement?It is a written plan signed by you, your preceptor, and your program that sets your objectives, projects, deliverables, competencies, schedule, and supervision.
- What makes a good practicum learning objective?Start with an action verb, tie it to a real project, and name the product that proves it. A few specific, measurable objectives beat a long list.
- What should I do before my practicum starts?Finish clearances and trainings early, map every required form and deadline, draft your objectives, and plan a day-one expectations talk with your preceptor.
- What happens in the first week of practicum?Expect orientation, account setup, trainings, introductions, and a slow start on real work. Use the quiet time to learn how the site runs and ask questions.
- Can I get paid for my practicum?Sometimes. Many practicums are unpaid, but some sites offer wages or stipends and many programs allow it. Ask early and confirm your program's rules.
- Can I do my practicum at my current job?Many programs allow it if the practicum work goes beyond your regular duties, someone other than your usual boss supervises, and the plan is approved.
- Can I complete my practicum remotely or hybrid?Often yes, but program rules vary, so check with your coordinator. Plan for substantive projects, regular check-ins and deliberate relationship-building.
- Should I do my practicum in summer or during the semester?Summer allows focused, often full-time work with fewer classes, while a semester practicum spreads hours alongside coursework. Your program and schedule decide.
- Does my practicum have to match my career goals?No. A close match helps, but the skills you build matter more than the topic. A strong placement in a nearby area often beats a weak one in your exact niche.
- What if there are no practicum sites near me?Look beyond health departments, consider remote or out-of-state sites, and propose a project to a local organization. Bring your coordinator in early.
- What if my placement falls through before I start?Tell your practicum coordinator right away, reopen your backup contacts, and ask about deadline flexibility. Most programs have handled this before.
- Do international students need CPT for a practicum?Often, even for unpaid placements. Talk to your international student office before you accept, and allow two to three months for authorization and paperwork.
- Can I do my practicum in another country?Often yes, if your program approves the site and preceptor. Plan extra time for agreements, travel safety review, visas, and funding. Check your school policy.
