How do I choose between practicum sites?

When you have more than one option, or you're deciding whether a single option is good enough, judge each site on what you will actually do there and who will guide you. A well-known name with vague work usually teaches less than a small organization with a real project.

What to compare

• The work itself. Can the site describe a concrete project or set of tasks, not just "helping out"? You need work substantial enough to produce the deliverables your program requires.
• Supervision. Will your preceptor have regular time for you, and do they meet your program's qualification rules? A strong supervisor who is available beats an impressive title who is never around. See preceptor qualification requirements before you commit.
• Competency fit. Sketch which competencies the work could support. If you can't connect the projects to at least a few, keep looking or ask about adjusting the scope.
• Logistics. Schedule flexibility, commute or remote options, pay or stipend, and whether an affiliation agreement already exists all affect how smoothly things go.

Questions to ask each site

• What would a typical week look like for me?
• Who else on the team would I work with?
• Have you hosted students before, and what did they produce?
• What does a successful practicum look like from your side?

Making the call

Rank your options on the factors that matter most to you, then talk it through with your practicum coordinator. They often know which sites give students meaningful work and which ones struggle to. If no option clears the bar, it can make sense to keep searching, as long as your timeline allows it.
