What if I'm stuck doing busywork at my practicum?

Short answer

Some admin work is normal. If it crowds out learning, do it well, then pitch a specific project tied to your learning objectives and your site priorities.

Filing, data entry, and formatting slides are part of every public health office, and a few weeks of it can teach you how the organization actually runs. It becomes a problem when it's all you do and your deliverables and competencies aren't getting any closer.

Do the small work well first

Your credibility for bigger work comes from how you handle small tasks. Finish them on time and look for ways to add value: build a cleaner tracking sheet, spot a pattern in the data you're entering, or write short instructions for the next person. That also gives you something to point to when you ask for more.

Pitch something specific

"Can I have more responsibility?" is easy to postpone. A concrete proposal is easier to say yes to. Look for work your site already needs but hasn't gotten to, such as:

  • Summarizing program data for an upcoming report or grant renewal
  • A short literature scan or policy brief on an issue staff keep mentioning
  • Evaluating a survey, event, or outreach effort the team already ran

Tie your pitch to your learning objectives and required deliverables: "My program needs a final product that shows program evaluation skills. Could I evaluate last spring's workshop series?"

Watch the calendar

If weeks pass with no progress, check in with your faculty advisor before midterm. Many programs require a substantive final product, and your coordinator may be able to help reset the scope of the placement. Being underused on a remote placement has its own fixes, covered in the meaningful work problem.

If the opposite is happening and your project keeps growing, see what to do when your project scope keeps growing.
