How do I set boundaries at an always-on placement?

Late-night emails, weekend messages, and a preceptor who seems to be online constantly can make you feel like you should be too. As a student trying to make a good impression, you may be especially tempted to answer everything instantly. But someone else's sending habits and what they actually expect from you are often two different things.

Find out what's actually expected

Many professionals send email whenever it suits them without expecting an immediate reply. Rather than guessing, ask once, early: "I've noticed you sometimes email in the evening. Do you need a response outside business hours, or is next morning fine?" Most preceptors will say next day is fine, and now you have a clear answer.

Build boundaries into your routine

• Set practicum hours and share them. Mention them at the start of your placement or add them to your email signature.
• Agree on an emergency channel. A phone call or text reserved for truly time-sensitive issues makes it much easier to ignore routine notifications.
• Turn off work notifications after hours on your phone, or remove work apps from your personal device if you can.
• Batch your responses into set times during your practicum day instead of checking constantly.

Handling the fear

It can feel like classmates who are always available will look more committed. In practice, people who never recharge tend to do weaker work over time, and employers value steady, reliable output more than round-the-clock presence.
