How do I handle harsh criticism from my preceptor?

Critical feedback stings, especially when a draft you worked hard on comes back covered in comments. It can help to remember that preceptors rarely spend time critiquing work they think isn't worth improving. Detailed criticism usually means they're taking you seriously.

In the moment

Your only job right then is to understand. Resist the urge to explain or defend. Take notes and ask questions that get specific:

• "Can you show me an example of where the tone missed?"
• "What would a strong version of this section look like?"
• "Which of these changes matters most?"

Then thank them. You don't have to agree with every point to appreciate the time they spent.

Afterward

Give yourself a day before deciding what's fair. Sort the comments into three groups: clear fixes, style preferences at this organization, and points you truly disagree with. Make the fixes, adopt the house style, and raise any real disagreement calmly with your reasoning, not your feelings.

When you send the revision, briefly note what you changed. Visible follow-through often changes how a preceptor sees you more than the original draft did.

Separate tone from content

Some people give feedback bluntly, which is a style issue, not a verdict on your potential. Look for the useful point underneath. If feedback becomes personal, demeaning, or discriminatory, that's different: document it and talk to your practicum coordinator.
