What should I say in a practicum thank-you note?

Preceptors usually supervise students on top of a full workload, often without extra pay. A sincere thank-you at the end is a small courtesy that people remember, and it leaves the relationship on a strong footing.

Make it specific

Generic thanks are forgettable. Specific thanks show you noticed their effort. Mention one or two concrete things:

• A piece of feedback that changed how you work
• An opportunity they opened up, like presenting to leadership or joining a partner meeting
• Time they gave you when they were clearly busy
• Something you learned by watching how they handled a hard situation

A simple structure

1. Thank them for supervising your practicum
2. Name a specific thing they did and why it mattered
3. Say what you'll carry forward into your career
4. Mention that you'd like to stay in touch, and how you'll follow up

Four to eight sentences is plenty. For example: "Thank you for trusting me to lead the focus groups this spring. Your feedback on my facilitation made me far more confident, and I'll use that approach in every community engagement project I take on."

Format and timing
