- How do I write a strong ILE paper?Build it around one central argument about how your competencies worked together in your practicum project, using concrete examples instead of a checklist.
- What sections does an ILE paper usually include?Most have an introduction, background, project description, competency discussion, reflection, and conclusion. Your program's template comes first.
- Is the ILE the same thing as a capstone?Often it overlaps, but not always. The ILE is the CEPH requirement; a capstone is one common way programs meet it. Your handbook defines what yours involves.
- How do I keep my reflections from reading like a summary?Spend a sentence or two on what happened, then explain why it mattered, how it connects to other experiences or theory, and what you'd do differently.
- What should I put in my practicum portfolio?Include five to eight strong pieces covering different skills, each with a short note on the problem, your role, and the outcome. Share only what is cleared.
- How do I list my practicum on my resume?Give it a descriptive title and four to six accomplishment bullets: action verb, specific task, and a measurable or concrete result. Skip the hour count.
- How do I talk about my practicum in a job interview?Prepare four or five short STAR stories from your practicum: the situation, your task, the actions you took, and the result. Match each to skills the job needs.
- How do I ask my preceptor to be a job reference?Ask near the end of your practicum while your work is fresh, confirm they can speak positively, and send your resume, projects, and target roles.
- Can my practicum turn into a job offer?Sometimes. Do excellent work, tell your preceptor mid-practicum that you're interested, build advocates across the site, and keep applying elsewhere.
- When should I start applying for jobs before graduating?Many students start three to six months before graduating. Government jobs and fellowships often take longer, so note their deadlines early in your final year.
- Should I apply to jobs asking for more experience?Often yes. Experience requirements are frequently flexible, and your practicum counts. Apply if you meet most qualifications and can show the key skills.
- What if my ILE is short of the page requirement?Don't pad it. Deepen thin sections with analysis, limitations, competency links, and implications, then ask your advisor whether length is a hard rule.
- How do I cite my own practicum work in the ILE?Describe each product briefly, state your exact role, and cite or append it as your program directs. Credit collaborators and get permission for internal files.
- How do I prepare my ILE presentation or poster?Lead with the problem and your key finding, keep text sparse, show your role and competencies, and rehearse aloud at least three times with time for questions.
- Do I need my site's permission to use data in my ILE?Usually yes. Ask your preceptor in writing what you may use, follow any data agreement you signed, and ask your program whether IRB review applies.
- Can I share practicum work samples with employers?Usually yes, with permission from your site. Remove confidential data, credit collaborators, and explain your role. If you cannot share it, describe the work.
- Should I organize my portfolio by competency?For program review, organizing by competency often works well. For employers, group work by skill area or project and mention competencies in each description.
- Should my portfolio be a website or a PDF?A PDF is simplest and works for most applications. A simple website helps if you share work often or have visual or data projects. Many students keep both.
- How do I add my practicum to LinkedIn?Add it under Experience with a clear role title, the organization, dates, and two or three results. Check with your site before posting about projects or data.
- What should I say in a practicum thank-you note?Name one or two specific things your preceptor or team did, say what you will carry forward, and mention that you would like to stay in touch. Keep it short.
- How do I stay connected with my site after it ends?Reach out every few months with a brief update, a useful article, or congratulations on their work. Keep requests small and look for ways to give back.
- How do I decide what job to pursue after my MPH?Notice what energized you at your practicum, talk to people in roles you are curious about, and pick a next step that builds skills, not a final destination.
- What fellowships are open to new MPH graduates?Look at government health agency, professional association, and nonprofit fellowships. Eligibility, funding, and deadlines change, so verify each program.
- Should I take the CHES exam after my MPH?It can help if you are heading into health education roles. Check NCHEC for current eligibility, costs, and renewal rules, and see if target jobs ask for it.
- Should I get a DrPH or PhD after my MPH?A DrPH generally targets practice leadership; a PhD targets research careers. Many people work a few years first to clarify goals. Compare programs carefully.
