What does the final practicum evaluation assess?

Final evaluations differ by program, but most combine a preceptor's rating of your work with your program's review of your documentation. Knowing the criteria from week one lets you build evidence for them instead of hoping it lines up at the end.

What evaluations commonly cover

• Competency performance: how well you applied each selected competency, often on a scale
• Professionalism: reliability, communication, meeting deadlines, and working with the team
• Deliverables: whether your products were completed and useful to the site
• Learning objectives: how far you progressed on the goals in your learning agreement
• Hours and documentation: whether your log and required forms are complete and verified

Your program may add a self-evaluation, a site evaluation, or a reflection. Check your handbook for the exact forms and who completes each one.

Get the rubric early

Ask your coordinator for the final evaluation form at the start of your practicum and share it with your preceptor. Many preceptors supervise students from several programs, and each uses different criteria. Variable quality standards explains why expectations can differ so much.

Make the evaluation easy to complete

A couple of weeks before it is due, send your preceptor a brief summary: your hours, finished deliverables, and one or two examples for each competency. This helps them write specific comments and reduces the chance of a rushed, generic evaluation.

Complete your self-evaluation honestly

If your program includes one, rate yourself using concrete examples, not just adjectives. Acknowledging a growth area thoughtfully usually reads as maturity, not weakness.

If the evaluation surprises you

If a rating seems off, ask your preceptor what informed it before reacting. If you still disagree, share the evaluation and your own evidence with your faculty advisor, who can add perspective and explain how the evaluation affects your grade.
